Dental Hygiene

What to expect during a dental hygiene appointment:

  • Your teeth and gums will be examined to assess the amount of plaque to remove. Any associated risk factors will be explained by the dentist.
  • Your teeth will be professionally cleaned using specialized equipment and polishing pastes. This process is known as Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a more modern and effective version of traditional "scaling-polishing".
  • The dentist's role is also to teach you how to care for your teeth to prevent plaque from reappearing.

You will receive advice on the most suitable brushing technique, as well as on the use of dental floss and interdental brushes.

Dental hygiene in our practice also has a preventive role, contributing to the treatment of gum diseases (periodontal diseases) and bad breath.

If you have a bridge, removable appliance, orthodontic treatment, or implant, you may have specific hygiene needs, and the dentist will guide you personally.

It is recommended to come regularly for hygiene appointments to maintain a clean, healthy mouth without inflammation.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

Advantages of a dentist appointment for scaling and polishing:

  • Reduction of long-term tooth loss risk.
  • Decreased risk of cavities, reducing the need for fillings.
  • Fresh breath and lasting reduction of bad breath.
  • A scaling-polishing appointment usually lasts between 20 and 45 minutes.

Details of the procedure

  • The dentist will apply a plaque-disclosing dye to highlight areas missed during brushing or flossing.
  • They will give you personalized oral hygiene advice to complement your daily routine at home.
  • A rounded periodontal probe will be used to measure the space between teeth and gums to detect any potential periodontal disease (gum inflammation or infection).
  • If needed, the dentist will implement treatment to prevent worsening of this disease.
  • The condition of your gums will be regularly monitored to ensure good oral health.
  • It is recommended to schedule scaling-polishing sessions every 3 to 6 months, depending on your needs, to maintain healthy gums long-term.

Spaces between teeth (Gaps)

By Dr. Popescu Ramona – Côté Gare Dental.

The term "spaces" generally refers to areas left by missing teeth, although they can also result from natural spacing between teeth.
Teeth may be absent for several reasons:

  • Extraction due to disease (cavities, periodontal disease)
  • Developmental anomalies (hypodontia), meaning one or more teeth never form — a relatively common condition affecting 3 to 8% of the population

It is always necessary to replace missing teeth to ensure normal chewing, but it is often recommended for aesthetic reasons or to improve speech.

Solutions to replace missing teeth

  • Dental implants
  • Prostheses (dentures)
  • Bridges (dental bridges)
